There is no shortcut. There is no hack. There’s only one way so get after it.
Jocko Willink is a retired United States Navy SEAL known for his teachings on leadership to help people lead and win in business and in life. I first heard about Jocko and his message in Tim Ferriss’ book Tools of Titans: The Tactics, Routines, and Habits of Billionaires, Icons, and World-Class Performers. I loved Jocko’s no nonsense approach to being successful, especially when applied to health and fitness. Jocko’s new book,
Discipline Equals Freedom: Field Manual is part motivation and part practical guide to reaching your goals and overcoming obstacles. If you are looking for great motivation with a simple and direct delivery, you will find it in Discipline Equals Freedom: Field Manual
Get After It
The first part of this book is dedicated to Jocko’s thoughts on discipline and motivation. He has a straightforward approach to achieving goals (” ‘How can I work out consistently everyday?’ WORK OUT CONSISTENTLY EVERYDAY”), but he attacks the problem from many different angles to help you get fired up to overcoming your obstacles. He addresses how and why to become motivated, overcoming procrastination, weakness, and stress, and applying discipline to your life immediately. He teaches you how to become focused and “Get after it.”
The second half of the book is more detailed “actions” with instructions and information on working out, nutrition, and injury prevention. There is still plenty of the discipline and motivation teachings in these chapters, but Jocko also provides specifics that can help guide you to a healthier and more active lifestyle. I especially liked his tips on setting up a home gym, and his beginner, intermediate, and advanced workout series. Using basic movements and simple (or no) equipment, his strength workouts are thorough. His nutrition advice focuses on real foods, and avoiding the foods that are no good for our bodies. Nothing complicated, just simple nutrition principles.
Discipline Equals Freedom
Discipline Equals Freedom: Field Manual is a great book to read cover to cover to inject yourself with a hefty dose of motivation, or as a book you open frequently to remind yourself of why you are working towards your goals. Training for a trail race? Jocko’s advice will motivate you to hit the trails even when the weather (or a warm bed) holds you back. Trying to stick to a strength training routine? Jocko’s words will fire you up to get after it, and his workout series will give you precise instructions. Want to fuel your body with better nutrition? Jocko lays it out like it is about fueling your body for ultimate performance. Pick up a copy of this book if you are ready to get “stronger, smarter, faster, healthier, better.” Get After It!
