You’ve seen them. The instagram photos of gorgeous mountain views, the facebook posts of epic adventures, the snapchat stories of unbelievable travel. You sigh and think, “I can’t have those adventures. I work all week and have kids, pets, and (insert responsibility here) to take care of.” It’s easy to believe that you have no time for anything outside of your daily activities. But with a few changes, the right mindset, and careful planning, anyone can fit exciting and new activities into their lives. Adventures can and should be incorporated into a busy and responsibility filled life.
Think Small and Local
Getting the right mindset is the first step to having a life filled with adventures. An adventure does not always have to be a month long wilderness trek on another continent. For some, trying an exotic restaurant down the road is an adventure, and for others it could be wandering down a nearby hiking trail. Look for the smaller adventures that you can find around you. Start local, and see what areas in your town that you have not taken the time to discover. Is there a State Park near you that you haven’t visited yet? Check for area campgrounds, and try a camping adventure close to home. Let your own definition of adventure define your activities. Whatever adventure suits you best, look local to find out what you’ve been missing. These kinds of adventures can even be done during the week, as they don’t take a lot of time or travel!
Choose Adventurous Activity
What are your hobbies and activities of choice? Choose activities that are conducive to adventures. For example, I love trail running for my exercise. Not only does it keep me in shape, but it is an easy way to get outdoors and have a mini adventure every weekend. I usually run trails at the local park near my home, and there is always a different route to take or a new critter to see. It’s also an activity that I can take to the road, and discover new trails around the Tampa area or on my travels. Other people enjoy hiking, rock climbing, fishing, and cycling, which are all adventurous activities.
While getting in some mini weekday adventures is a great way to add some excitement to your routine, maximizing your weekends will give you more time for some bigger adventures . Weekends are the time to delve a little deeper into exploration. Plan a weekend camping trip, or a weekend getaway to a nearby town. Pack up your bikes (or other outdoor equipment) and spend the day exploring a new area. Plan ahead with a picnic lunch, and enjoy being out on the road. Spending your weekend out on an adventure is much more rewarding than spending it at the mall!
Plan Your Travel Around Adventure
Now that you are incorporating adventure into your everyday life, it’s time to plan your vacations. Your vacation days can take on a more adventurous spirit. Plan you travel around the adventures you enjoy. One of my favorite vacations are destination trail races. Since I love trail running, I find a trail race in another state that sounds fun to do, and I plan my vacation around it. And I don’t usually stop at just the one trail run! I love visiting a new area and not only running the trail race, but taking my other days there to check out some other area trails. Plus it is an adventure exploring a new city and checking out the local restaurants! This is by far my favorite way to vacation, and most of my travels are long weekend getaways that are only a short flight away.
